14th Brooklyn: Arrived

I have now had a chance to examine and take some photos of my 14th Brooklyn. I am very pleased with the sculpting and design by F&G and by the artistry of Leuthen Studious which performed the commission for me.

F&G has animated the unit beautifully, it is just full of action and dynamism. Well done! I'm now signed up for  F&G's Iron Brigade. I really like the approach of designing a nuanced, historical unit.

14th Brooklyn (84th New York) finished!

Here is the 14th Brooklyn (84th New York) finished! The 28mm metal figures are by "Forgotten & Glorious" and the painting was done by Leuthen Studios. The poses are unusually well animated and show the Regiment in action at Gettysburg with Cutler's  2nd Brigade, Wadsworth's 1st Division, I Corps at McPherson's Wood on the first day of the battle and later on Culp's Hill on the second and third day.

14th Brooklyn (84th New York)

My new project is the 14th Brooklyn (84th New York). This chasseur-equipped militia regiment is being modeled and soon to be released by the talented sculptors at Forgotten Glorious.

Hopefully the artists at Leuthen Studios will render them something like this:

This painting of the "14th Brooklyn, 1862" is by the ACW artist, Don Troiani, to whom full credit for his research and artistry...and inspiration for my latest commission.

114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves" FINISHED!

My 114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves" unit has been completed by the talented artist at Leuthen Studios and will shortly be on its way to California. He has done an excellent job of working with my instructions (as advised by many of my readers!). I'm very happy with the result.

The 114th uses metal figures from Perry, "Zouaves in fezzes and chasseur trousers". Flags are by GMB.

114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves" a First Look

This is a test figure of the 114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves" painted for me by Leuthen Studios. I think I'm going with this look. The full Regiment will follow next.

Blue and Red: How to Paint the 114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves"

For my first foray into the American Civil War, I have decided to take on a tough subject: how to paint the 114th Pennsylvania "Collis Zouaves" as they might have appeared at Gettysburg.

The problem is not so much in the detail but rather the basic colour of blue of the Zouave vest and red of the Chasseur pants of the uniform.

As you can see, the colours range from muted Venetian Red (per Yanni), Madder Red from certain sources, through a very bright red in some images. Likewise the blue of the vest ranges from a grey blue to a very dark Union blue-black.

If you have a view, or better still information, please let me know on this blog.

Actual 114th uniform. But how did it look in 1863?

Re-enactors of the 114th follow the preserved uniform. But is it oxidized?
